Ravitsky Discusses AI in Health Care on Radio Show

Hastings Center President Vardit Ravitsky was a guest on Doctor Radio Reports on SiriusXM on June 4, discussing AI in health care and other bioethics issues.

Asked whether she thinks AI will ever operate autonomously, apart from human clinicians, Ravitsky said that she envisions health care providers being “seduced” to give AI increasingly complex tasks and autonomy, including taking notes during medical appointments, offering diagnoses, and proposing next steps. But for AI to do these things “without any supervision of a human eye, that’s where I think we need to be really careful.”

“We should resist the temptation to let AI be autonomous,” she said.

Other topics discussed included ethical issues in assisted reproductive technologies, legalization of medical aid-in-dying in U.S. states and in Canada, and The Hastings Center’s efforts to diversify the field of bioethics.
