The Department of Medical Ethics and Health Policy at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania seeks candidates for an Assistant Professor position in either the non-tenure clinician-educator track or the tenure track. Track will be commensurate with experience. Responsibilities include 60% protected research time with minimal administrative responsibilities. The successful applicant will also teach one course a year in the Department of Philosophy in the School of Arts & Sciences and might have some additional teaching responsibilities of one other medical ethics course a year. The position is a junior faculty position. The successful applicant will be recommended for a secondary appointment in the Department of Philosophy in the School of Arts & Sciences. Applicants must have an M.D. and/or Ph.D degree and have demonstrated excellent qualifications in education and research.
The Department is dedicated to advanced research on theoretical and applied issues in bioethics. We are looking for a philosopher who is interested in investigating issues related to resource allocation and priority setting in either domestic or global spheres. The candidate could also have interests in research ethics especially in the global sphere. The area of specialization is Political Philosophy or Ethics. Research interests may also include issues related to international justice and its implications for clinical research in developing countries. Previous background in bioethics is not necessary.
The Department has six major research interests: resource allocation, vaccines, global health and research ethics, neuroethics, research ethics, and transplantation ethics. There are five full time faculty members in the Department, four of whom have doctorates in philosophy or political theory. Salary is a 12-month competitive salary based on medical school scale. Proposed start date is July 1, 2012 or later. This position will remain open until a suitable candidate is found.
